Why Slicer Settings Matter More Than Your Printer

Two people can own the same 3D printer and get completely different results — the difference is almost always in the slicer settings. Getting these right is the fastest way to improve your print quality without spending a dollar on hardware.

The Essential Slicer Settings Explained

Layer Height

Layer height controls detail and print time. A good rule of thumb: use 25–50% of your nozzle diameter.

  • 0.4mm nozzle → 0.1mm (high detail) to 0.2mm (standard) layer height
  • Lower layer height = more detail, longer print time
  • Higher layer height = faster prints, less detail

Print Speed

Faster isn’t always better. Start conservative and increase gradually.

  • PLA: 50–60mm/s is a reliable starting point
  • PETG: 40–50mm/s to avoid stringing
  • ABS: 40–60mm/s with an enclosure
  • Always slow down the first layer to 20–25mm/s for better adhesion

Print Temperature

Always start with the middle of the manufacturer’s recommended range, then adjust.

  • PLA: 190–220°C
  • PETG: 230–250°C
  • ABS: 230–250°C
  • Too low → poor layer adhesion. Too high → stringing and oozing.

Infill Percentage & Pattern

Infill affects strength and material usage.

  • Decorative prints: 10–15% infill, gyroid or honeycomb pattern
  • Functional parts: 30–50% infill, grid or cubic pattern
  • Maximum strength: 80–100% infill

Supports

Use supports for overhangs greater than 45°. Tips:

  • Use tree supports for organic shapes — easier to remove
  • Set support interface layers for a cleaner contact surface
  • Increase support Z-distance slightly if supports are hard to remove

Retraction

Retraction prevents stringing during travel moves.

  • Direct drive: 1–2mm at 25–45mm/s
  • Bowden: 4–6mm at 40–60mm/s
