How to Reduce 3D Print Time Without Sacrificing Quality

Why Print Speed Matters
A large 3D print can take 10, 20, even 40+ hours. Cutting that time down — without ruining the result — is one of the most valuable skills a maker can develop. Here are the most effective ways to speed up your prints while keeping quality high.
1. Increase Layer Height
This is the single biggest lever for reducing print time. Doubling your layer height roughly halves your print time.
- Switch from 0.1mm to 0.2mm layers for a ~50% time reduction
- Use 0.3mm layers for large, low-detail prints (props, bases, enclosures)
- Keep fine detail areas at lower layer heights using variable layer height in your slicer
2. Use a Larger Nozzle
A 0.6mm or 0.8mm nozzle deposits more material per pass, dramatically cutting print time on large models.
- 0.6mm nozzle: ~40% faster than 0.4mm for the same model
- Best for: large decorative prints, props, functional parts
- Not ideal for: fine miniatures or jewelry
3. Optimize Infill
Most prints don’t need high infill. Reducing infill is one of the easiest time-savers.
- Drop from 20% to 10% infill for decorative prints — saves 15–25% print time
- Use gyroid or lightning infill patterns for the best strength-to-time ratio
- Use modifier meshes to apply high infill only where strength is needed
4. Increase Print Speed (Carefully)
Modern printers like Bambu Lab and Prusa MK4 handle high speeds well. Older printers need more caution.
- Increase speed in 10mm/s increments and test for quality loss
- Keep outer wall speed lower than inner walls for a clean surface finish
- Enable pressure advance / linear advance to maintain quality at higher speeds
5. Reduce Support Material
Supports add significant print time. Minimize them by:
- Rotating the model to reduce overhangs
- Splitting the model into parts that print flat
- Using support blockers in your slicer to remove unnecessary supports
6. Start With Well-Designed Files
Poorly designed STL files often require heavy supports, have unnecessary geometry, or force inefficient orientations. Starting with optimized, print-tested files saves time before you even open your slicer.
