SVG vs DXF vs AI vs EPS: Which File Format Works With Your Laser Machine?

Why File Format Matters for Laser Cutting

When you buy a design file bundle, you'll see multiple formats: SVG, DXF, AI, and EPS. Each has its strengths and works with different software. Choosing the right format saves you time and prevents errors when cutting.

SVG – The Most Universal Choice

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is the most widely supported format. Most popular laser machines read SVG directly:

  • Glowforge: uses SVG natively via its web interface
  • xTool: supported in xTool Creative Space
  • Lightburn: imports SVG easily
  • Cricut & Silhouette: SVG is the primary format

If you can only pick one format, pick SVG.

DXF – Best for CNC and CAD Software

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is the AutoCAD standard, widely used in CNC routing and industrial laser communities:

  • Compatible with AutoCAD, Fusion 360, CorelDRAW
  • Ideal for CNC routers and plasma metal cutters
  • Lightburn also handles DXF well

If you're running a CNC machine or CAD software, DXF is the better choice over SVG.

AI – Adobe Illustrator's Native Format

AI is Adobe Illustrator's native format. Its biggest advantage is full editability before cutting:

  • Easily adjust colors, sizes, and add text
  • Requires Adobe Illustrator to open
  • Can be exported to SVG or DXF after editing

Best for users who want to customize designs before sending them to the laser.

EPS – The Versatile Vector Format

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is an older but still widely supported vector format:

  • Compatible with CorelDRAW, Illustrator, and Inkscape
  • Common in print design and graphic work
  • Less common in the laser cutter community than SVG
